Thornapple Township

Located in the fastest growing corner of Barry County, Thornapple Township is home for over 6,000 people, including the folks who live in the village of Middleville. The township has several plats and developed residential area that continue to attract new people to the community.

Agriculture is still a vital part to the township’s 36 square miles. The land to the west of Middleville generally has been kept in agricultural production, with the rolling land to the east developed into home sites. One of our greatest recreational assets is the Thornapple River that bisects the township.

With the growth come services the township provides. The east side of Duncan Lake is served by a sanitary sewer system that has helped preserve the scenic two miles long lake. Thornapple Emergency Services (TTES), with both full and part-time personnel, provide fire and ambulance coverage for local residents. The township also maintains an assessing department that covers both township and village properties.

Planning and zoning is also an important tool for managing township growth and since 1991 the township has been operating under township guidelines. The township has a nine member Planning Commission and a five member Zoning Board of Appeals. Thornapple and the Village of Middleville share a professional planner.
