Rutland Charter Township

Rutland Charter Township covers 36 square miles lying west of the City of Hastings, the county seat of Barry County. With a population of 4,187, Rutland features rolling hills, the Thornapple River, Algonquin Lake and fine recreational areas.

Hastings and Thornapple Kellogg School Districts serve the community, as does the Kellogg Community College.

Located within the township is the Barry County Expo Center, site of the Annual Barry County Fair and other special activities throughout the year. Industrial facilities such as Flexfab Horizons International, Hastings Fiberglass, D & S Machinery, along with several retail businesses all call Rutland their home.

Barry Expo Center

Rutland Charter Township is primarily a residential community with a portion of the Barry State Game Area in the southeast corner. A YMCA camp near Algonquin Lake attracts the youth of the area. There are also several adult foster care homes in Rutland.

Located near the hub of the county, Rutland is well served by three major state highways, M-37, M-43 and the newly created M-179 that connects to US-131 Expressway, to the west.

Rutland Charter Township Hall

With a vision for continued planned growth, Rutland has its own planning and zoning department. The township is governed by a seven-member board that meets the second Wednesday of each month.
