Prairieville Township

    
     As Prairieville Township moves into the new millennium it hopes to maintain its rural character and environmental quality, open space and family farms.  The continued development of homes will be nestled among some of the finest recreational opportunities.
     The 36 square miles of Prairieville is mostly flat to moderate hills, comprised of about 50% farmland, 18% forest and 14% of water or wetlands.   Developed lakes include Lake Doster, Pines Lake, Shelp Lake, Upper Crooked, Gull Lake, and Little Long Lake.  Partially or

underdeveloped lakes include Warner, Lower Crooked, Miller, West Gilkey, Indian and Prairieville Creek.  The township is a mecca for hiking, hunting, fishing, pleasure boating, skiing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.  There are five township lake parks and to non-lake township parks.

     Three school districts (Delton Kellogg, Gull Lake and Plainwell) serve the educational needs of the community.  The year 2000 estimated population of Prairieville Township is 3673.   The health care needs of the residents include the Delton Family Medicine, Delton Medical Center, Plainwell Medical Center and Promed Physicians in Richland.  There are major hospitals including Pennock in Hastings, Borgess and Bronson in Kalamazoo, and Pipp in Plainwell available in Prairieville residents.
     Major roads serving the township are State Highways M-43 and M-89.  The community also has well maintained local roads.  Service businesses flourish in Prairieville: auto repair, restaurants, hardware, ministorage, marinas, laundry, auto dealerships (2), tool and die company, plumbing, electrical businesses and various home occupations.  Three banking institutions are nearby.
     Most housing in Prairieville is composed of residences on large rural lots, summer and full year residences around lakes and limited number of apartments around lakes and in rural settings.  Camp Merrie Wood for Girl Scouts is located on Warner Lake and the Michigan Career ant Technical Institute is adjacent to Pine Lake.   The Delton Senior Housing offers the older citizens of our community a home.
     Each fall, Prairieville draws thousands of folks to Farm Days with exhibits, entertainment, and the opportunity to return to the rural roots of our Barry County pioneer families.  The Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame is also located in Prairieville Township on Milo Road.
     Churches in the community include Prairieville Bible Church, Doster Reformed Church, Prairieville Community Church, Milo Bible Church and several churches in nearby communities.
    
     Prairieville township is governed by a five member board that meets the second Wednesday of each month.   The township is zoned and administered by their own Planning and Zoning Commission.   The community is served by the Prairieville Township Police Department and maintains the Pine Lake Fire Department on Lindsey Road.
